The Baikal Museum, Irkutsk Region. Address, mode of operation, photos and reviews of tourists
Lake Baikal is a real miracle and the pearl of Russian nature. While relaxing in this unique nature reserve, be sure to take the time and informative excursions. The first place that is definitely worth a visit is the Baikal Museum. This tour will be interesting to everyone. The thing is that we are not an ordinary museum of local lore, but a completely unique educational institution in Russia and the whole world.
History of the collection
Difficult to understand the word "limnology" literally translated from Greek into Russian sounds like "lake" and "teaching". Accordingly, we are talking about the science that studies reservoirs. The modern Baikal Museum in Listvyanka was opened in 1993 on the basis of the collection dedicated to the great lake of the Limnological Institute of the SB RAS.It was decided to place the exhibition on the shore of Lake Baikal, not far from the source of the Angara River, in the village of Listvyanka. To date, the museum's collection includes 17 collections, and the total number of exhibits - more than 16 thousand copies. In Russia, this is the first and so far the only exhibition dedicated to a particular lake. In the world there are only two museums similar to this one.
New Museum Format
The exposition consists of various documents and subjects telling about the history of the great lake and the person’s acquaintance with it in different periods. But of course, this is not why the Baikal Museum is so popular among tourists. When visiting this unique complex, you can see the living world of Baikal not only in photographs and in the form of a layout, but also live in a real aquarium. In addition, there is in the museum and another interesting excursion - immersion in the bathyscaphe. This exhibition is a simulator and is a reconstruction of the interior of the apparatus, in the windows of which real-life records of underwater life are broadcast in high quality.
The greatest impression on tourists is made by their own aquarium, included in the exposition of the museum.Today, visiting this amazing institution, all tourists can see the living representatives of the lake’s fauna with their own eyes. In aquariums soma, carp, burbot, grayling, omul, bream peacefully swim. Also here you can see sturgeon, crucian and pike. However, these fish are found in many reservoirs of our country, and therefore many tourists are most interested in watching the seal - the seal living in the waters of Baikal. For these animals a separate large aquarium has been allocated. If the purpose of your trip is Irkutsk, Listvyanka must be included in the itinerary. It is important to understand that the Baikal Museum is not just an entertainment exhibition, but a completely unique object. In aquariums, live "exhibits" live in conditions as close as possible to the natural. Water is supplied directly from the lake with sufficient depth and is not filtered. And today, these aquariums are considered the coldest in the world, since the temperature in them is only 4 degrees, and if you increase it, the fish and animals may die.
"Bathyscaphe" and other collections
More recently, the Baikal Museum has pleased its guests with a new interactive exhibition. Now all visitors to the organization are not outside observers of the wonders of underwater life, but full participants in the research. A separate room is decorated for an underwater vehicle and has porthole windows. They broadcast the recording, taken during a real dive. The duration of the session is about 20 minutes. 16 people can participate in the “immersion” at a time. In addition, the exhibition has a permanent exhibition “The development of life against the background of geological evolution”, which clearly demonstrates all stages of the history of our planet: from the Big Bang to our days. And an additional bonus - the Baikal Museum is surrounded by an arboretum, after examining that you can get acquainted in detail with the flora and landscapes of the area. The administration of the institution plans in the near future to also create a winter garden.
