Russia: Novosibirsk "Super Charm-Tau Factory"

In the summer of 2014, in Russia, several applicants were selected to continue to receive significant funding from especially large research projects. All this is a huge scientific installations, implemented on the basis of leading scientific institutions.
The list was as follows:
1. Tokamak "Ignitor" from the Troitsk Institute for Innovation and Thermonuclear Research "Rosatom".
2. High-flux beam research reactor PIK from the Petersburg Institute of Nuclear Physics, NRC Kurchatov Institute.
3. The source of the fourth-generation specialized synchrotron radiation from the Zelenograd Institute. F. V. Lukin.
4. The complex of superconducting rings on the colliding beams of heavy ions NICA in Dubna.
5. International Center for the Study of Extreme Light Fields based on a laser complex of subexawatt power from the Nizhny Novgorod Institute of Applied Physics, RAS.

All these complexes are at various stages of construction and are of interest both to scientists and to urban tourists.

We will start from the bottom of this list and visit the Novosibirsk installation. Early in the morning we arrive at the appointed time at the INP, where we are met by the staff of the institute. They agree to visit the construction. We turn on the light and unlock the inconspicuous iron door, behind which begins a multi-span descent down the iron ladders. It feels like we are going underground about twenty meters. Finally, the ladder ends, and we find ourselves in a spacious tunnel of polygonal cross section along which thin tubes of scientific equipment are laid. The walls of the tunnel are not even painted - it is clear that it was built recently and the equipment has just been mounted.


We ask, and our satellites report that this is not yet a super charm-tau factory, but a future channel for transferring elementary particles from one operating accelerator to another.We take out cameras and wander through the tunnels.
A side branch goes into a donut. Here the walls are white as snow, there is no equipment at all, and numerous traces of unfinished construction are noticeable everywhere. This ring is the future plant for the production of antimatter and matter, or rather elementary particles - electrons and positrons, both for the super charm-tau factory and for the already operating accelerators, replacing the currently available, less intensive sources. Being born here, they will be sent to accelerators, where they will continue to accelerate and, having gained the necessary energy, will collide with each other. When a collision gives rise to many other particles, analyzing the characteristics and trajectories of which, scientists will tear off more and more new secrets of the universe. These are the fundamental research that in tens of years will turn into such possible practical results as gravity control or space-time manipulation — everything that now forms the toolkit of science fiction writers only.
Similar things happened before - nowadays everyone uses plasma and liquid crystals in the screens of televisions and telephones,lasers in medicine and semiconductors in all electronic devices, and yet in the middle of the last century, all this was only the field of research physicists. This will happen in the future.









Leaving behind cute stupid and turning around the bend, we find ourselves in a vertical underground mine, or trunk. I decide to go upstairs to a small ventilation window and through it I look out onto the surface, where I see green trees and the wall of a building.


Having gone down, we return to the polygonal tunnel, where we learn that those pipes, that nowadays only the adjustment equipment has been laid. And red semicircular caps are spatial geo-markers for controlling movements. When it comes to the installation of accelerator technology, the bill comes in fractions of a millimeter.


We decide to go through the tunnel and soon go out to the place where it starts to turn right. Here, part of the pipes goes up and disappears in the hole in the ceiling. We are informed that they are going to the VEPP-3 accelerator.




The tunnel drops in height, but continues to be a few tens of meters. There, at the end, the pipes dive into the ceiling once more, and a human walker goes to the right, ending with another staircase to the surface.

But we still do not need to exit, we go back and go to the other end of the transfer channel. On the way the tube leaves the tunnel for the third time, and we stop in front of the closed iron gate. There are no keys, but a hole is found near the ceiling where the cable bundle goes. A person does not climb into it, but the camera on a tripod passes.



We photograph and see that there is another stem behind the door. The descent to the sump is also visible, and, most importantly, the tunnel continues, going into darkness. It is there that the future super charm-tau factory will be located, which is a collider colliding electrons and positrons.

The length of the factory ring is only eight hundred meters, but in fact it is not only in terms of size, but also in the accuracy of the detection of results. In the world there are two strategies for the study of elementary particles. One of them is the build-up of collision energy, but for this, the dimensions of the accelerator ring must increase, which makes it necessary to create giant installations, like the Large Hadron Collider. The second strategy involves the use of ultra-sensitive detectors and increasing the intensity of particle collisions. For the super charm-tau factory, the second strategy was chosen.The intensity of collisions of electron-positron pairs in a new installation will be a hundred times higher than that achieved in the world for installations of this type.
The main objectives of the research should be the violation of CP-symmetry, obtaining hypothetical pentaquarks and gluball, and the search for violations in the Standard Model. Why did animatter disappear in the outside world, where did it go? After all, particles appeared in pairs and, in the course of interaction, should annihilate in pairs, too. But now antimatter in free form is not found. Maybe somewhere there are whole planets from animatter? What is mass and what is the nature of gravity? All these and other problems are expected to be studied at the new installation, the completion of which requires about 18 billion rubles in prices for the summer of 2014. Of this amount, it is planned to receive about 75 percent of the budget, the rest should be obtained from other sources. To date, only a few tens of meters of a large ring have been covered.
"Super Charm-Tau Factory" - a world-class accelerator whose construction will allow the Novosibirsk Institute of Nuclear Physics. G.I.Budker take a place in a small number of organizations with installations of world scientific importance.
