Rheinmetall and Steyr Mannlicher have developed a new RS556 automatic rifle

According to a joint press release from Rheinmetall and Steyr Mannlicher, they jointly developed a new 5.56 × 45 RS556 modular automatic rifle, which they want to offer to the Bundersever tender, which plans to replace G36 rifles from 2019.
The RS556 inherited the features of the STM 556 rifle developed by Steyr Mannlicher and in production since 2012. Its feature is a dry lubrication system that can adapt to different rifle lengths (from 417 to 508 mm), depending on the task.

The standard version of the RS556 is equipped with a 406 mm barrel and a magazine for 30 rounds. Its mass is 4.2 kg, the rifle has a telescopic sight. It is reported that the rifle has good ergonomics and is easy to handle. It can be equipped with barrels of seven sizes: 293 mm and 330 mm in the “personal protection weapon”, 370 mm (carbine), 406 and 450 (automatic rifle), 505 mm and 550 mm (high accuracy rifle) versions.

The new rifle is compatible with the Infanterist der Zukunft program (IdZ is an improved system) and can be equipped with a 40mm grenade launcher, the Picatinny rail is also installed on the RS556 (standards MIL-STD-1913, STANAG 2324 and STANAG 4694), which allows you to mount various sights .
Both manufacturers ensure that with a special type of breech, the RS556 can be constantly operated in a reliable manner, even in adverse conditions, that is, in cold and heat. This argument should appeal to Bundsever after criticizing the Heckler & Koch G36 rifle due to the fact that it becomes inaccurate when heated.
