*** One of the most outstanding professional wrestlers in the world. He repeatedly won the “world championships” in classical (Greco-Roman) wrestling among professionals, including the most authoritative of them - in Paris (1905-1908). Although I lost some fights, over 40 years of performances I have not lost a single competition, championship or tournament.

Ivan Poddubny was born in the village of Bogoduhovka of the Zolotonoshsky district of the Poltava province (now Chernobayevsky district, Cherkasy region, Ukraine) in 1871 in the family of the Zaporozhye Cossack Maxim Ivanovich Poddubny. His whole family was famous for its strength. Ivan also inherited from his ancestors great height, phenomenal strength and extraordinary endurance, and along the line of his mother, who sang beautifully, a delicate ear for music. In childhood, on Sundays and on holidays, he sang in the church choir.

Since childhood, Ivan was accustomed to hard peasant work, and from the age of 12 he worked as a laborer. Father Maxim Ivanovich himself was of heroic growth and Herculean power. After many years, Poddubny will say that the only person who is stronger than him is only his father.

In 1893-1896 he was a port loader in Sevastopol and Theodosia, in 1896-1897 he worked as a clerk in the firm "Livas".

In 1896, in the Feodosia circus of Beskaravaynogo, Ivan Poddubny defeated very famous at that time athletes - Georg Lurikh, Borodanov, Razumov, Italian Pappi. From that moment, and began his career as a fighter.

Since 1897, he performed in circus arenas (since 1899 in the troupe of E. Truzzi) as an athlete weightlifter and wrestler (he started from the Russian belt wrestling, in 1903 he switched to the classical (French) wrestling). Repeatedly performed with tours in Russian cities and abroad, visiting about 50 cities in 14 countries of 4 continents.

One of the most famous fights of Poddubny were fights with the French wrestler Raoul le Boucher. Their first fight ended in victory for the Frenchman, since Le Boucher used the dishonest method of avoiding Poddubniy’s seizures, smearing oil, and managed to stretch the fight, at the end of which the judges gave him primacy with the wording “for beautiful and skillful departures from acute techniques”. The decision of the judges caused the anger of the public, and Poddubny was so greatly shocked by dishonest judging that he thought to withdraw from the professional struggle. However, the support of friends and colleagues forced Poddubny to change his mind and at a tournament in St. Petersburg he took revenge on Le Bush, forced the Frenchman to be in a knee-elbow posture for twenty minutes, whistling and hooting the public, until the judges took pity on the French wrestler and gave up Poddubny. Moreover, the defeat caused a strong tantrum in Le Bush.

In early May 1915, in Yekaterinoslav (in the building of the old circus near Ozerka), he defeated champion Alexander Garkavenko (“Black Mask”), and two days later - over another champion Ivan Zaikin.

During the Civil War he worked in circuses of Zhytomyr and Kerch.

In 1922, at the age of 51, he began performing at the Moscow Circus. The doctors, after the examination, stated that the athlete’s health was excellent, there are no complaints.

In 1924 he left for a long tour in Germany and the United States.

On February 23, 1926, all the telegraphs of the planet “trumpeted” about him: “The other day, Ivan Poddubny defeated the best fighters of New World in New York, winning the title of“ champion of America ”.” The six-time world champion among professionals impressed everyone not only with his phenomenal strength and skill, but also with sports longevity, because in 1926 he was 55!

In 1927 in Arkhangelsk he defeated the famous Vologda wrestler Mikhail Kulikov.

In November 1939, in the Kremlin, he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and the title of Honored Artist of the RSFSR for his outstanding services “in the development of Soviet sports”. Carpet left in 1941 at the age of 70.

During the war years he lived in the territory occupied by the Germans in the town of Yeisk, a small resort town on the shores of the Azov Sea. He replied with a refusal to go to Germany and train German athletes, saying: “I am a Russian wrestler. They will stay. In 1945 he was awarded the title "Honored Master of Sports of the USSR." The post-war years lived in terrible poverty, for the sake of food I had to sell all the won rewards.

Ivan Maksimovich died on August 8, 1949 in Yeisk from a heart attack. He was buried there, in the city park, now bearing his name. Here he erected a monument, and the museum of I.M. Poddubny and the sports school named after him are located nearby.

For the first time, Poddubniy entered the ring in 1896, when Beskaravayny circus toured the Crimea. From this moment began the sports career of an athlete.Port loader Ivan watched the performances of athletes with interest. After the number of entertainers turned to the hall with a proposal to participate in the duel. Poddubny went out and surpassed titled athletes who performed "at the belts." The beginning of the wrestling career was laid.

In Paris, the "Russian bear" spoke out against titled athletes. Ivan Maksimovich won 11 bouts, but lost to Frenchman Bush. Before the fight, Bush went to the trick - he oiled the body with oil so that the opponent's hands slid over it. The judges awarded the victory to Bush, and Ivan Poddubny received a lesson for life. Since then, Ivan has become an ardent opponent of dirty methods in the ring.

*** In 1905, the international championship again took place in Paris, the victory of Ivan on it was triumphant. In the next 3 years, the series of winnings continued. Poddubny was invited to competitions in different countries. Journalists wrote about the athlete just about the "champion of champions."The life of the bogatyr took place on the road, but he dreamed of his own home, family, and in 1910 decided to leave the sport.

Poddubny returned to the circus arena at the age of 42, worked first in Zhytomyr, then in Kerch. In 1922, when Ivan Poddubny was already 51, a strong man was invited to the troupe of the Moscow Circus. After a medical examination, the doctors stated that the athlete has excellent health, there are no contraindications.

Then there was work in the Petrograd circus. The difficult financial situation forced Ivan Poddubny to agree to tour in Germany and America. The performances were sold out, but in 1927 the athlete decided to return to Russia. It is assumed that in the United States a wrestler earned a lot of money, which remained on the account in an American bank.

Ivan Poddubny performed in a circus until the age of 70, and it was a personal record of the artist.

Ivan's first love for a girl from her native village was short-lived. Rather, not even love, but youthful love.

The second time the athlete fell in love with a ropewalk Emilia. The girl was older and more experienced than Ivan, subtly played on the feelings of the young man, forced the athlete to indulge her whims and caprices.Soon, on the horizon of Emilia, a rich admirer appeared, with whom the woman left.

The marriage lasted 7 years, until Antonina met an officer and ran away with him - at this time Poddubny toured in Odessa. A few years later, Antonina wanted to return to her spouse, but the man did not forgive her.

The last love of Ivan Poddubny is the widow Maria Mashonina, the mother of his student. A strong man was shocked by the beauty and sensuality of a woman. The couple lived on the shores of the Azov Sea, in Yeisk, where they bought a house after an American sportsman’s tour. With Maria, the Russian hero survived to death. Poddubny did not have children, but Ivan Maximovich treated his son Maria with a fatherly tenderness.

After the death of the champion, the wife was able to pay for a simple grave without a monument. Since childhood, Ivan Maximovich established a hard sport mode. The wrestler with height of 185 cm weighed 120 kg. By 1910, the athlete has already won a large number of awards and trophies. It is assumed that by that time the total weight of the athlete’s badges and gold medals was two poods.
In 1919, drunken anarchists tried to shoot Poddubny in the Zhytomyr circus. A similar incident occurred later in Kerch. An officer who was in a state of intoxication shot the wrestler, and a year later the athlete got into the dungeons of the Odessa Cheka. He advised the athlete to change the appearance, pointing to the roots of the artist, who descended from the Zaporizhzhya Cossacks. Then there was the famous photo of Poddubny with a mustache, in Circassian with a dagger and gasjacks.
When Poddubny was 53 years old, the wrestler lost to Ivan Chufistov, the famous Ryazan wrestler. After a hard fight, Ivan Maksimovich told his opponent:

“I am a Russian wrestler. They will stay.
