How to make a frame in "Photoshop": step by step instructions
There are questions whose answers do not require lengthy preambles. For example, in order to tell how to make a frame in “Photoshop”, it is not necessary to convince the questioner for a long, tedious and pathetic way of the advantages of framed images.
On the other hand, the question is not so simple. What would it be for Photoshop if it could not offer its users a dozen options for frame design of pictures? But let's get down to business. Is the editor open?
Perform a stroke
The easiest way to take advantage of the direct offer of the program, which unambiguously hints to us how to make a frame in "Photoshop". This is the Run Stroke command, and you will find it in the Edit menu, but first you need to, of course, select your image (Ctrl + A).
In the dialog box, select the parameters (width, color, location, blend mode, opacity) and click OK. The frame is ready. Only if you select "Outside", you must first go to "Image"> "Canvas Size",where to enlarge the document taking into account the desired thickness of the frame or to cause a transformation (Ctrl + T) and reduce the size of the image itself.
In the latter case, you can already fill the frame (on the new underlying layer) not only with color or gradient, but also with a pattern, changing the basic color to a regular color in the settings panel.
Simple and fast, but, you see, it is somewhat miserable, so let us turn to the possibilities of layer styles.
Stroke as layer style
Having built up the canvas in the photo (or the dimensions of the new layer on it), select the "Stroke" command in the "Layer Style" list in the "Layers" menu or click the Fx icon in the layers panel below. Choosing a position outside, fill the frame-stroke color, gradient or pattern. Add other styles to taste. This can be an internal shadow, embossing or internal glow. Looking through the parameters of different styles, you can achieve a certain effect, but there are few options, especially since the frame is rustic-simple (rectangular).
We use ready-made styles.
A good photo frame in Photoshop can be obtained if you use the standard pre-installed styles (Window> Styles), which, by the way, you can create yourself or download on the Web.
On the new layer, fill the image with the color of the future frame, choose the appropriate style, mark the inner outline of the frame (rectangular selection or oval area), press Delete. Now you can call the styles panel and click on other options. Suddenly even better work?
A pretty decent frame in Photoshop can be created using filter gallery effects.
We load a photo, add a new layer under it, fill it with a color (or pattern) of the future frame or, instead of a casting layer, we enclose a texture or background image.
Next, we define the inner contour of the frame by selecting either a rectangular or oval selection with a small (optional) shading.
Then we invert the selection ("Selection"> "Invert") and turn on the quick mask by clicking on the icon with the dotted ring at the bottom of the layers panel or selecting the "Edit in quick mask" command from the "Selection" menu.
Now go to “Filter”> “Filter Gallery” and select some effect by manipulating its settings and watching the preliminary result in the preview window.
Normally, for example, the effect of "Glass" or "Ocean waves" in the group (folder) "Distortion" works; Spatter and Airbrush effects in the Strokes group; "Ragged edges" in the "Sketch" group.
Selecting the option to taste, turn off the mask by clicking again on its button, press Delete, remove the selection (Ctrl + D) and meticulously look at the result. If something is wrong with the color, double-click on the bottom layer “Blending options”, and selecting “Color overlay”, set the desired tone.
If you go back and select “Filter”> “Appearance”> “Fragment” at the stage of the mask enabled, and then duplicate the effect several times, turn off the mask and delete the selected one, the result will not disappoint either.
Until now, we framed the image right on the spot, and now it's time to figure out how to create a frame in Photoshop with a transparent opening so that you can then insert any photo into it.
Create an empty frame from scratch
Unlike the picture framing procedures outlined above, creating an empty frame begins with a new document. For example, on a white background with dimensions sufficient for high-resolution images (just in case).
Document created. Select it completely (Ctrl + A), turn on the Rectangular (or Oval) Area selection tool, create an outer frame outline. Then, in the settings panel at the top, we switch to the "Subtract from the selected area" mode and select the outline of the inner side of the frame. Now invert the selection ("Selection"> "Invert") and click Delete.
Everything, the pig is ready. Now you can bring down all the power of the editor's tools on it - from simple fill (color, pattern, gradient) to fantastic styling.
Interesting results are obtained when using the predefined styles (Window> Styles) of the Effects for Text, Buttons, Textures, and Web Styles groups.
Some styles can be used in combination with the fill if the selected frame (Ctrl + click on the thumbnail in the layers palette) is copied to a new layer (Ctrl + J).
How to make a frame with rounded edges in Photoshop? In principle, everything is the same as in the previous step, only here we create selections for the frame from the contours of the figures.
We turn on the Rectangle with rounded corners tool, in the settings panel at the top left we switch to Contour mode, on the same panel we set the radius of curvature, by stretching both contours of the frame, go to the Contours tab (Window> Contours) , click on the icon with a dotted ring ("Load contour as a selected area"), invert the selection ("Selection"> "Invert") and click Delete. And then we act by analogy with a rectangular frame.
The propensity for creativity can be guessed by a user who is interested in how to draw a frame in Photoshop, and not create it.Such individuals, owning a pen and brush, can create their own contours of the frame, using the above design options.
Maybe, to begin with, let's use the standard set of vector shapes in Photoshop?
As a frame, you can use many of the preset patterns in the Shape list, which appears on the settings panel when you turn on the Free Shape tool.
But the ready-made shapes of the frames also look good, especially as in the two-color versions you have the options “Fill” and “Stroke”, in each of which you can change “Pure color”, “Gradient” or “Pattern”. As you can see, there are no limits for imagination in creative tasks with how to make a frame in Photoshop.
In addition, the frames can be decorated (supplemented) with other ready-made figures (including patterns) by selecting the "Combine figures" option on the settings panel (the button with adjacent squares with the hint "Operations with figures").
If there is a desire to superimpose layer styles on a frame, the shape must first be rastered by selecting this command in the list that is opened by clicking on the shape layer with the right mouse button.
Now the background layer can be deleted (or you can cover it with an eye), and by going to the File menu, Save for Web with the PNG extension.
All the considered options for frames, regardless of the method of creation, can be decorated with ornaments, using a lot of shape brushes that are generously offered in a huge amount and variety on the Internet for free download.
For certain categories of users, it is enough to know how to make a frame in a couple of clicks automatically in Photoshop. This option is offered by the "Default Operations" in the "Window" menu.
