In October 1992, another coup attempt took place. In Dushanbe, where the Wahhabis then ruled, in the morning came the troops of the Gissar militants of the head of the Popular Front, Safarali Kenzhaev. On the day of the battalion commander Khasansha Baksanov and I was summoned by the division commander - Colonel Mukhritdin Ashurov. He was a good commander, he later received a second Chechen Hero of Russia. He explained the task: the US State Department appealed to the Kremlin with a request to save the staff of its embassy, to take them to the airfield to the aircraft. Hotel "October", where the embassy was located, was in the heart of the battles.
I said that I could handle the forces of my company. He took two platoons of fighters, he himself went on the first armored personnel carrier. On the closing, third, “box” the elders appointed Ensign Sergey Sharhel.
In Dushanbe there was a layer cake made of “vovchikov” and “yurchikov”
But they did not shoot at us, they understood that there would be an answer. Traveling around the corpses lying on the road, we almost got to the hotel, when suddenly at the intersection near the central department store, they started firing grenade launchers at the convoy. The first two armored personnel carriers slipped through the area, and the third militants cut off the dense fire.
Sharhel has an iconostasis of military awards for Afghanistan. Sergey jumped off his armor and began to click off the grenade throwers hiding behind the trees. Here and we turned around and drove up. The scouts quickly cleared the area, the militants fled - who survived. We had one wounded: a conscript soldier hooked in his hand.
American diplomats are in a hurry to “Hercules”, and our guys can finally smoke a cigarette ... Photo: Maxim MARMUR
We took out 25 people from the embassy. Half of them are guards. Terribly frightened, everyone asked for armor. The first ambassador to the landing compartment of the BTR was the ambassador. Funny such a man -in jeans and a big fur hat that looks like a fur cap. But in fact it was warm, degrees 20.
We are located at the top and rushed to the airport. There before our eyes sat a huge C-130, “Hercules”. From him, vaunted American special forces jumped out and immediately took up the defense right under the wings. Tajik military mouths opened in amazement, and ours laughed: at the airport it was absolutely quiet. My fighters quickly "shot" cigarettes from Americans - we had a hard time with them. The ambassador waved his hand to us, and the C-130 flew away.
I was already zamkomdiva, when ten years later I was invited to a solemn reception at the US Embassy. The ambassador, another, thanked the Russian soldiers for the rescue of American diplomats, said it was a very tangible sign of friendship and cooperation between our governments and peoples.
