Animation - what is it? Value definition

When we hear the word “animation”, first of all, favorite cartoons come to mind, and we feel a sense of gratitude for the pleasure brought in childhood (and not only in childhood!) To the people who create them. But animation in the broad sense of the word is not only cartoons.

So what is animation? The definition of this concept throughout the world is interpreted as "revitalization". In general, the word animation is borrowed, it comes from the Latin "anima", which in translation from this dead language is the soul, and "animation", respectively, is revival, inspiration, and enthusiasm. That's what animation is, the meaning of this word, or rather.

Animation = animation?

No one would argue with the fact that animation is a type of art, a representation of movement in cartoons, in computer graphics by displaying a series of frames, alternating with a certain frequency, providing a holistic visual perception. That is, animating is an illusion, due to which one gets the impression that what is moving by itself cannot move. This impression is achieved by showing one after the other many independent drawings.

This is where the animation differs from the video, where a truly continuous movement is being filmed.

A synonym for animation is animation. This is a more familiar word for a Russian-speaking person, it was formed from the Latin "multi", which means "a lot". And this is understandable: in order for the hero to “live”, his movement must be repeated many times. How many? At least 10 frames per second.

Still, it is the definition of “animation” that more accurately reflects the modern capabilities of animated film - masters not only by drawing a sequence of pictures “enliven” the characters of their creations, but they do this by putting a part of their soul in them.

The roots of the "revitalization" of pictures go to antiquity ...

Animation - what is it, and when were the first attempts to revive the drawing? Such attempts were made by cavemen who tried to capture the movement in the Paleolithic cave paintings. They depicted animals with a lot of legs that overlap each other.animation definitionIn Iran, they found a vessel made of clay, on the walls of which 5 drawings of a goat are shown in motion. The age of this vessel is 5 thousand years old!

Similar drawings dating back to 2000 BC were found in Egypt.

What are not the first examples of animation?

But then the only device that could revive these drawings, showing them in motion, was the fantasy of ancient people.

For the first time such devices are mentioned in the second century of our era. Somewhere in 180 in China, Ding Huan invented a zotrop for this purpose. In the 18th century, phenacistiscope, cineograph and praxinoscope were invented. These were the first popular devices for animation. What kind of appliances?

The action of the phenakystoscope is based on the use of a set of rotating slots.animation what isThe observer could see the sequence of images due to two disks, which were placed on the same axis and rotated simultaneously. On one of these disks there were gaps, on the other images were placed. The viewer looked along this axis of rotation, and the slits passed before his eyes, thanks to which he could consistently see the images from the second disk.

But the praxinoscope used rotating mirrors inside a large cylinder to revive images. Images "looked" in the direction of the mirrors.
With the help of these devices, only one viewer could see lively pictures.

Animation types

The first known story is an example of showing animation recorded in 1828. He demonstrated a rotating disk, on one side of which a bird was depicted, and on the other - a cage for it, the Frenchman Paul Roghet. When moving this disc, the impression was that the bird was sitting in a cage.

In 1892, the first session of "light pantomimes" took place; it was in the optical theater of Emile Reynaud - the French inventor and artist. Raynaud made an apparatus for his theater on the basis of a zootrop, having improved it with a system of mirrors, and the inventor also connected the apparatus with a lantern. Thanks to his “magic” light, the image was shown on the screen, and many viewers could already see it at the same time.

This animation was made possible after the creation of the camera and projector by inventor Tom A. Edison.

Animation history

Many historians consider the first real animator of the Englishman James Stewart Blackton, his first animated film called "Magic Drawings" was released in 1900.The animator created his masterpieces like this: he drew an image on the blackboard, then photographed it, and then erased it. And so in a circle: drew again, photographed, washed ...
